What is Pentecost? Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit went into the twelve apostles. In Chapter 2 of Acts of the Apostles, written by Luke, he describes what happened. Pentecost is ten days after Jesus’ Ascension into Heaven. In this article, we will learn about what Luke said in Acts, what the apostles did after, and how to celebrate Pentecost.
In Acts, Luke describes what happens in the room in which the Holy Spirit guides the Apostles. According to Hallow, Acts chapter two is about Pentecost. A summary of Acts 2:1-8 is that all of the Apostles were in one room when a mighty rushing wind burst in and divided tongues of fire appeared. One tongue of fire had gone to each of them and rested on them and they had been filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit had given them the ability to speak in other languages, so they did. They had then gone out of the house and were able to understand every language. They had all they needed and went out to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ.
After they received the Holy Spirit they spread out and did individual things. The Following List is a short thing about what each Apostle did during the time of preaching.
Peter: He set out to Antioch and became the first Bishop of Antioch. Peter traveled many
more places before being martyred in Rome on an upside down cross. He is very famous
for building the beginnings of the church and being the first Pope.
Andrew: Brother of Peter and first saw Jesus. He is known as the Apostle to the Greeks.
This is because he preached around Greece before being Martyred on an x-shaped cross.
James The Great: He was the first apostle to be martyred and he was a brother of John.
He was killed by a sword.
John: He was the Gospel writer who wrote poetically and was the only Apostle that died
of old age. John was also preaching in Greece most likely in a different part of it though.
Philip: Not much is known about his ministry and mostly taught in smaller communities.
Bartholomew: Also known as Nathaniel, he preached in many areas around the world and
was also martyred.
Thomas: He went to go preach in India and he is also known as the doubting Apostle
because he doubted the resurrection of Jesus.
Matthew: A former tax collector who preached mostly in the Mediterranean. He is one of
the four Gospel writers.
James the Less: He stayed in Jerusalem, the Holy City, and ended up becoming the first
Bishop of Jerusalem and was later stoned to death and bludgeoned to death by a club.
Judas Thaddeus: Often overlooked because of Judas Iscariot, Judas was in many places
before being martyred.
Simon the Zealot: Some say that he preached with Judas Thaddeus, this is mostly because
both were martyred in the same year in the same town.
Matthias: He was the one who replaced Judas Iscariot after the resurrection of Jesus. He
preached in Cappadocia.
There are many ways to celebrate Pentecost and a main one is to be thankful. We
must have gratitude for Pentecost because without it we would have no idea about Jesus
and His mission. We mostly wouldn’t have known about life, death, and resurrection. We
can also just pray and be with our families. Think about what it was like for the Apostles
and what they saw on that day.
There is so much that has not been uncovered about Pentecost and what happened
next; We have to keep that in our mind. We have to spread the word because Jesus, His
Apostles, and many more died for our belief. We must explore and go into depth in our
wonderful faith.
