“Put that phone away, you’re wasting your time!” “You are getting brainwashed by all the social media nonsense!” “Nope, give me that phone right now!” We’ve all heard these phrases, and maybe have even uttered them silently. But is social media all that bad? Today, we're going to discuss social media and its impact on your life in various ways. On the one hand, excessive social media use can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. Cyberbullying, online harassment, predators, scammers, and the spread of misinformation are all real concerns. And let's be honest, who hasn't mindlessly scrolled through their feeds for hours, wondering where the time went?
But social media isn't all doom and gloom. When used intentionally, it can be a powerful tool for good. It can connect us with others, provide a platform for self-expression, and even help us spread the Good News. The Bible says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). We can use social media in a way that is beneficial to ourselves and others. One incredible example of someone who used the internet for good is Blessed Carlo Acutis, a young Catholic (who is soon going to be canonized) who passed away in 2006 at the age of 15. Despite his short life, Blessed Carlo Acutis left a lasting impact on the world through his website documenting Eucharistic miracles and Marian apparitions. He used the internet to spread the Gospel and bring people closer to Christ, and his work continues to inspire countless people around the world. Check out the bibliography! I put his website in there!
So, how can we use social media wisely and safely? Here are a few tips:
- Be mindful: Remember that what you post online is a reflection of who you are and your values.
- Know who you're connecting with: Be careful when accepting friend requests or following others online. Make sure you know who they are and what their values are.
- Use social media to build up, not put down. Use social media to spread kindness, compassion, and love.
- Keep your priorities straight: Remember that social media is just a tool, and it shouldn't distract you from what's truly important. As Jesus said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength" (Mark 12:30).
So, to wrap this up, yes, social media can be a double-edged sword, but when used correctly, it can be a powerful tool! And it's okay to keep up that Snap streak – but do it wisely and with intention. Share a funny moment, a beautiful sunset, or an inspiring quote. Use social media to bring joy and positivity to others. Honestly, the possibilities are endless, and the impact that you have can be profound. By using social media wisely, we can be the light of Christ in the digital age. Let's make the most of this powerful tool!
