Saint Joseph is the husband to our Blessed Mother Mary and earthly father to Jesus
Christ. He is the Patron Saint of fathers, workers, unborn children, travelers, immigrants, happy
deaths, carpenters, and the Universal Church. Outside of Sainthood, he was Jesus Christ’s earthly
father, but not biological father since Mary gave birth to Jesus through the miracle of the Virgin
Birth (meaning by the power of the Holy Spirit, not from the marital act with St. Joseph). He was
also a carpenter, which we know from a question asked from a crowd of people, saying, “Is this
not the carpenter’s son?” (Matthew 13:55). Also, in Matthew’s Gospel, we see Jesus’, and
therefore Joseph’s, genealogy, which begins with Abraham and eventually leads to King David,
which then continues on until reaching Jesus Christ. This shows that Saint Joseph has a royal
lineage relating to King David, a prominent figure in the Old Testament. Joseph is not mentioned
much in the later parts of the Gospels, but he is still a holy, righteous person who was given a
crucial responsibility of caring for both Mary and Jesus, and as he fulfilled what was requested
of him, he showed his devotion to his family and to God.
