Life: What is it, really?
As Catholics, we are pro-life. What, though, is the meaning of that word that fills us from
the moment we are conceived until the moment our hearts stop? I believe it means having the
chance to embrace God’s gifts, and an important part of life is what we do with those gifts.
The fifth commandment is “You shall not murder.” The fact of the matter is that
abortion is the intentional killing of a baby, which robs the child of the opportunity to use his
spiritual gifts to glorify God. When a baby is aborted, not only is his heartbeat stripped from
him, but also the chance of him seeking Our Lord.
Scripture shows us that every one of us was made in the womb as a beloved child of
Our Heavenly Father, and therefore, each and every baby is worth protecting. Genesis 1:26
reads, “Then God said, ‘Let us make humans in our image, according to our likeness.’” We can
connect this to Mary’s Fiat when she says in Luke 1:38, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the
Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” All mothers, including Mary, have the
chance to say “no” to parenthood, and sadly, so many unplanned pregnancies lead to horrific
abortions. Yet, Mary had the most famous unplanned pregnancy of all, and we have the gift of
her “yes” that saved not only Jesus’ life, but the lives of all who follow him.
It’s vital to know that an abortion causes great pain to the child and the mother, not only
spiritually, but physically as well. To truly comprehend this, we must understand the horror of
abortion. These are the most innocent, voiceless humans, who are relying on their mothers to
keep them alive, but in the act of abortion, they are either ripped limb by limb or starved to
death with a pill. This is why we must fight. We must stop the massacre of children and the
pain this terrible act causes to women. We must save the unborn.
In our world, the pro-life cause isn’t mainstream, so it can be hard to fight for something
if you don’t know the details surrounding the topic. We should ask for God’s wisdom and turn
to His Word, because He is the center of our very being, and in asking Him, we shall receive
answers. We can also pray for the courage to speak the truth of how barbaric abortion is at its
core. We also can share that there is help for moms in crisis pregnancies, some of this help
being pregnancy centers. An act that we can strive to accomplish is to donate to these
pregnancy centers, taking exceptional care of mothers that chose life for their children.
Certainly, at the very least, we can pray for the unborn and for the mothers involved in
unplanned pregnancies. Unborn babies everywhere are counting on us to do our part, so let’s
do God’s work to save their lives. Let’s make sure that more babies can encounter God’s great
works and serve him with His many gifts.
